Positioning your webcam for the best Skype lesson.
The webcam in the picture is positioned so I can have a clear view of both hands on the keyboard.
To check your webcam placement on Skype, you can go to the Tools page, then choose Options and then finally Video Settings to view your video camera placement.

Notice how the view from the camera is above and to the side of the student.
This is important to allow me to watch your technique as well as see what keys your fingers are on.
It is only necessary for you to see me on your device when I am demonstrating technique. Then you can swivel on the bench to watch me.

A few other tips.
- Moderate lighting is usually better than bright lighting. Daylight diffused by blinds provides a good definition of the keys on the keyboard.
- Avoid pointing the camera toward a source of bright light such as a sunny window or a lamp.
- If you have a window near the keyboard like I do, close the curtains or blinds.
- A good way to tell if the lighting is right is to check to see if you can see the space between the white keys.
